Programme Description

Studies

The Degree Programme in Nursing has educated culturally competent registered nurses, mainly for hospitals, since 1998. The primary studies focus on basic nursing skills, and gradually shift towards in-depth studies of medical and surgical nursing with a transcultural approach.

Courses

The nursing curriculum includes health promotion, illness prevention, restoration of health, and alleviation of suffering. The practice can be completed nationally and/or internationally in different caring and nursing settings, ranging from elderly care in nursing homes to acute medical care in hospitals, preparing students for challenges they will meet in healthcare.

Career prospects

A majority of the graduates have found work as nurses in various settings in Finland, but also in USA, Sweden, Norway, Australia, and China as well as in international commissions. The education has also functioned as a springboard for further studies in Caring and Nursing Science both in Finland and other Nordic countries, as well as in other sciences on an Academic level.

Entrance Examination

All eligible applicants will receive invitations to the entrance examination. The entrance examination is compulsory and is held at 8.00 am 16 -18 April 2012 only in Vaasa, Finland. The invitation letter will state which day you are required to participate. Results from other entrance examinations are not accepted.
The entrance examination is divided into three parts: a written test, a psychological test and an interview. There are no preparations necessary for this entrance examination.

Health & Language Requirements Within Health Services

All students admitted to the Nursing program need to be in good physical and mental health and are required to provide a health certificate to the Student Health Services, Sarjakatu 2, Vaasa at the latest 31 July 2012. The health certificate is required for practice placements. Applicants applying to the Nursing programme need to consider:
  • That studies and work within this area require a good mental balance
  • Illnesses that prohibit movement and/or chronic skin diseases can become a health problem during the studies or later during your career. A disease that is contagious by blood can restrict your work possibilities.
  • This field of studies is not appropriate for people that use drugs or misuse alcohol and/or medicines.

Nursing students must show their ability to interact with patients in Finnish/Swedish before their first period of work practice which is in held during the second year of study. Students with no or little knowledge in the above mentioned languages need to study the languages independently during the first study year. Please check following links Arbis and EFÖ for further information of language studies in Vaasa.
